Education in the life of a board member

Chifundo Subiri is one our members of the board of trustees of For A Change organization in Malawi. She is a lady who did her high school from 2006 to 2009, where her single mother tried all her best in making sure she learn by doing small businesses. Her dream had always been to go to the University, unfortunately, she never made it. After high school Chifundo studied accounting where she obtained a certificate in financial accounting. She never went as far as diploma due to financial reasons. She stayed at home while searching for jobs. Later she got a job as sales person at a car spare parts company. While working she decided to go write again her form 4 exams in high school in 2016 so that she could apply for the university of Malawi. She went for weekend classes while working, and by the grace of God, she wrote the exams and passed, she applied for the University of Malawi where she got selected to study bachelor of science in urban planning, a five year program. She is currently in her second year.

How difficult education is in Malawi

It is difficult to acquire good education in Malawi because of the limited space in the Secondary Schools and Universities, not all students get a chance to study in the Universities and it is expensive to pay tuition for studies.

What is urban planning?

Urban planning is more of a public policy process that regulates development and the use of land in order to improve a Community's physical, economic, and social efficiency and wellbeing, for instance, in Malawi as a country, planners aim at facilitating proper and sustainable use of land, human and natural resources and providing means of employment in both agriculture and non-agriculture sectors. We see that education in Malawi is very important in all aspects of the development of the country.

So as organization For A Change, education is important to the people of Kwanjana because it brings about better understanding of how they can improve their community whether through agriculture or business activities. It helps the people to have a common vision of how they can bring about change in their community since they are aware of the resource and type of land. Hence they will be able to administer all development activities through the acquired knowledge, skills and experience. And not only this study is important but all kind of education. Research show every time the importance of education for the development of a country. Therefor it is great that we can give more and more children an opportunity to follow education and to encourage them to go to school.
