The highlights of working in Kwanjana
9 November 2024
Since I joined For a Change, my experience has been filled with rich, heartwarming moments that stay with you long after the day is over. This school is a true community, where every event strengthens the bonds between students, staff, and the wider village.
One of the most delightful aspects of life at For a Change is how we celebrate birthdays. Birthdays here are more than just a day of cake and gifts – they are vibrant expressions of life and laughter, with every student and teacher joining in the fun of our water-soaking tradition. Students fill buckets and cups with water, chasing one another across the school grounds, soaking anyone within reach – directors included! It never takes long before I get drenched too, laughing along with the children. The sight of everyone running around in joy, reminds me of the power of our shared happiness.
This same spirit of unity is also evident in how the school connects with the local community. One of the most moving experiences I’ve had was when the staff came together to distribute maize to local families in need. Kwanjana is a village where food security is a challenge, and the school takes its role in the community seriously, stepping up when help is needed. That day in December 2023, I watched directors, teachers, and support staff work seamlessly into the night, packing and distributing the maize while sipping on Frozy (a favourite drink). The families who came to receive the maize were not just grateful for the food, but for the sense of solidarity that the gesture represented. It was more than a donation; it was an act of love and respect for our neighbors. As I helped in handing over bags of maize and exchanged smiles with the community members, I felt a deep connection to the village, realizing how much the school does to provide holistic support.
The following morning after we had distributed maize to the community members, we had a trip to the lake with the other staff members. After months of hard work, the trip to the lake was a chance for us to strengthen our relationships outside of the school environment. As we sat by the water, shared meals, and laughed together, I realized how much this team means to me. Being part of this dedicated group of educators and staff members feels like being part of a family. It was a rejuvenating experience that reminded me that our work is made easier by the strength of our team.
Another experience that I find really beautiful is our sports days. The school ground comes alive with energy. The students are excited, eager to show off their footballing skills, while parents and local families gather to cheer them on. Sports day is a powerful reminder of how this school serves as a hub for the village. Whether it’s a friendly football or netball match, the laughter, cheering, and encouragement from the sidelines create an atmosphere of unity and support. It’s a day when the barriers between teacher, student, and community member melt away, and everyone becomes part of one large, happy team.
Lastly, graduation day at For a Change is a vibrant celebration that brings the entire community together to honor the achievements of our students, both young and old. The day begins with our nursery students proudly graduating to junior primary, their beaming faces matched only by the pride of their families. Dressed in tiny caps and gowns, they are celebrated for their growth and readiness to take on the next stage of their education.
In addition to the children, the day also honors the accomplishments of adults in our literacy program. These adult learners, many of them parents and community members, receive their certificates after months of dedication and hard work. The previous graduation was filled with joy when the directors made an exciting play as they dressed up really funny, but with educative messages. We concluded the day with gifts, dances and most importantly, food.
I feel truly blessed to be part of For a Change. This school is more than just a place of education; it’s a cornerstone of the village and a joy giver to the people involved with it. My time here has been filled with beautiful moments, and I look forward to many more.
